From compliance to confidence: rethinking CO₂ storage monitoring for deriving added value through performance, assurance, and closure.

This workshop explores how monitoring can shift from a compliance cost to a performance enabler for CCS. Drawing on international field experience and regulatory perspectives, participants will engage with experts from CO2CRC and our R&D partners to identify practical pathways for designing monitoring programs that build confidence, sustain performance, and enable timely closure.

As CO₂ storage projects scale up globally, monitoring must do more than confirm containment. It must demonstrate efficient pore-space use, sustain injection performance, and provide the evidence base for timely site closure and liability transfer. This workshop will reframe monitoring as a performance enabler and confidence builder, not just a compliance cost.

Led by Max Watson, Dr Hadi Nourollah, Dr Simone de Morton, and key experts from the CCS research sector, the session brings together perspectives from science, regulation, and practice. Attendees from regulators, industry, and academia will explore how a Confidence- and Value-Optimised monitoring approach can align technical, regulatory, and commercial needs.

The workshop will combine structured presentations with interactive discussion. Participants will gain insights from international case studies (Otway, CaMI, Aquistore, Tomakomai), consider cross-jurisdictional regulatory requirements (US, EU, Australia), and debate practical pathways to efficient, closure-ready monitoring portfolios.
